Advocacy

CITSA offers students a full advocacy service. Contact any CITSA Office.

Accommodation

CIT offers on & off campus accommodation (residential & homestay) for international & regional students. Visit the accommodation section above or contact our Accommodation Officer on 6207 4661.

Account Holds

Holds will stop you from re-enrolling, borrowing resources, accessing your results or graduating from the course because of: late payment or outstanding fees, unreturned library books, mail being returned because you haven’t updated your address or you have not provided enough ID evidence. Chat to CIT Student Services or call CIT Infoline on 6207 3188 to find out about a hold.

Ambulance Cover

In the ACT, a trip in the Ambulance can cost nearly $1000 if you don’t have a concession health care card or ambulance insurance. Ambulance Insurance is usually around $40 per year. CIT does not normally cover ambulance trips for students so it is in your best interest to make sure you’re covered.

Get a quote for plans that cover ACT Ambulance Services:

If you already have private health insurance, Ambulance Cover should be included as a levy on your premiums.

Appealing a Grade

Students have the right to appeal an assessment decision, speak to your teacher or Head of Department and CITSA before lodging a formal appeal. If you would like your result reviewed, CIT Student Services have forms available or you can download a form from the CIT Website here.

Care Inc offers the No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS) & FREE financial counselling services to low income earners & support them to overcome debt. They are based in Canberra, ACT, but provide financial counselling services to surrounding areas. Census Date

Each subject has a census date. This is the last day that you can withdraw from classes without a penalty & all VET Student Loans applications must be lodged by this date. Check your invoice for your census date for your subject.

Centrelink

Centrelink provides income support to students who meet the eligibility criteria. Australian Apprentices may be eligible for the following income support: Youth Allowance, Austudy, ABSTUDY, Concession, Living Away From Home Allowance, Student Start-up Loans, Education Entry Payment. CIT Card

All CIT students are issued with a CIT ID card, available once your student & amenities fees are paid. Cards are available from CIT Student Services located on every campus. You can also apply online.

CIT Complaints Policy

As soon as you have a problem, speak to your teacher, or a staff member you feel you can approach. If you are NOT ok with the response, contact the Head of Department in which you study. At any time throughout the process you can have a support person with you (friend, family, CITSA staff). CITSA office staff understand how this process works at CIT, so you can ask us for help along the way.

CIT Hair & Beauty

Hairdressing@CIT & Beauty@CIT are training salons open to the general public, staffed by apprentices & students who work in industry offering a range of professional cut & beauty services. Find them in C Block, CIT Reid. Bookings essential- call salon reception 02 6207 3246.

CIT Print Services

CIT Printing Service located at CIT Reid provides printing at a discounted cost & fast turn over. Call 02 6207 4150 or email citprintservices@cit.edu.au.

CIT RPL

Skills Recognition or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an acknowledgement of the skills you have learned from your work, life experience, or previous training. CIT can grant you a part or full qualification without having to re-learn things you already know. For more info go here.

Concessions

If you are a recipient of a Centrelink payment or hold a Pensioner Concession Card (PCC), you may be able to get 50% off your course fees. You will need to provide evidence of the payment or concession to CIT Student Services. More info on eligibility here.

Counselling and Crisis Support

CIT has qualified counsellors on campus. Call 02 6207 3290, to make an appointment with a CIT counsellor. This is a FREE service for all CIT students.

In a crisis, call Lifeline 24/7 crisis phone counselling service 13 11 14.

Dropping Out

To drop out of a course or subject you need to withdraw in writing. Visit Student Services or email infoline@cit.edu.au. You may still need to pay fees if you withdraw after your due date.

eLearn

eLearn is CIT’s online learning system. Check with your teachers if there are any online parts to your course and access eLearn at elearn.cit.edu.au.

Email

The best way to communicate with CIT staff is with email. If you have not yet got an email, set one up for free with mail.google.com. If you have any problems visit your CITSA office.

Equipment/Materials

You will need specific equipment and/or tools for your course. Your subject guide will tell you what you need. Most things you can get from the CITSA bookshop or citsa-shop.com or ask your teacher.

Apprentices: Depending on your award your employer may have to reimburse you for your equipment or materials. Check your award at fairwork.gov.au

Fees

You can pay your fees at any CIT campus or Post Office, with BPay or online. Before you pay your fees, check you have all the details on concessions & fee assistance. Contact CITSA for this information.

CIT Student Services does not accept CASH.

Apprentices: If your employer is paying fees on your behalf, it is still expected that all fees are paid (in full) by the due date.

Financial Assistance

Concession Discount: see Concessions

Fee Assistance: Can provide up to 75% of your course fees if you’re on a low income. Check your eligibility here.

VET Student Loans (Diploma or Above Only): Info on applying for a VET Student Loan from the Australian Government can be found here.

Trade Support Loans (Apprentices Only): Trade Support Loans are to assist you with everyday costs. The loans are paid in instalments. For more info & to check your eligibility visit australianapprenticeships.gov.au.

VTAS (NSW Apprentices Only): Vocational Training Assistance Scheme (VTAS) travel payments are available to eligible NSW Australian Apprentices to assist with the costs associated in travelling to their off-the-job training.

Health & Safety (Apprentices)

Under Work Health & Safety legislation, both CIT staff & its students have a series of duties in relation to protecting Australian Apprentices from illness & injury. You can access this at legislation.act.gov.au Most of it is common sense & courtesy.

Language Literacy and Numeracy Support (Apprentices)

Before you start your training, you will have to do a LLN assessment to help identify areas where you may require additional assistance to complete your apprenticeship.

Legal Aid Act

Provides free and low-cost legal help to people on a low income. Call the office on 02 6243 3411, email legalaid@legalaidact.org.au or visit www.legalaidact.org.

Free legal helpline available Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5:00pm, call 1300 654 314.

Lost Property

CIT Student Services keep a lost property register. It is also worth checking at your CITSA Office.

Microsoft Office 365

In order to access Microsoft Office 365 for free, students need a student email address. Even though CIT no longer uses student email, you do technically have a student email address. For Microsoft to verify that you are eligible, students must use an email in the format “CITXXXXXX@student.cit.edu.au” to apply. For example, if your CIT number is CIT123456, then your corresponding student email address is CIT123456@student.cit.edu.au. Enter this email in the form here to register.

All emails will be re-addressed to your personal email account which was registered with CIT when you enrolled. It can take up to 24 hours for you to receive the information on your personal email address – up to 24 hours. Please check your junk or spam folder.

Investigates complaints from people who believe they have been treated unfairly or unreasonably by an ACT or Federal Government agency.

Parking

Parking is available for free at CIT Bruce, Fyshwick and Gungahlin. Full-Time Students at CIT Tuggeranong and CIT Reid with a concession card can access ACT government pay parking for $36.60 a semester. Students at CIT Reid may be eligible for semester parking at a reduced rate of $36.60 if they are on a concession, an international student or studying select courses. Full information and eligibility here

CIT staff and students can also access $7 a day parking at the National Convention Centre Canberra. Just enter between 9am and 5pm and take your ticket and CIT Card to reception for validation.

Peer Tutoring

Peer tutoring is available for all students. For more info, to become a tutor or to book a session, head to your CITSA office.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

At CIT & in the workplace you have to wear appropriate PPE when instructed or where signage indicates it is required. This can include goggles, masks, hi-vis gear, lab coats, closed shoes or other protective items, depending on the class or job.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is where you hand in work without crediting your source or when you directly copy another person’s work. This is called deliberate academic misconduct. If it is proven, you may have to be re-assessed, get a fail with no opportunity for a re-sit and will have to re-enrol in the subject & pay applicable subject fees.

If you failed an assessment, you will get the chance to re-submit or re-sit. Your teacher can provide further details on this process. If you’ve been denied a re-sit or re-submit unfairly, talk to CITSA for help.

Smoking

Sorry folks, no smoking on any CIT campus. You can only smoke when outside the boundary on all CIT campuses. If you want info on quitting, talk to a CITSA Student Support Officer or call Quitline on 13 78 48.

Sport

CIT Reid has a hall & two squash courts available for use. Contact your CITSA office to book or borrow sports equipment.

Training Contract (Apprentices)

A training contract is used to register an Australian Apprenticeship with the relevant state or territory. You will have signed this before you start at CIT. By signing the training contract you agree to the obligations under Australian Apprenticeships. If you do not know your obligations get in touch with your Apprenticeship Network Provider (ANP).

Training Plan (Apprentices)

Before starting your training, CIT will complete a training plan with you & your employer. This training plan is reviewed every 12 months & is a living document that can change throughout the Australian Apprenticeship.

Transport

For convenience & money savings, travel on all Transport Canberra services with a MyWay card. Full time students can save money with a Tertiary Student MyWay Card. Apply & purchase at the CITSA Bookshop, CIT Reid.

Let CIT Student Services know if you have changed employers (apprentices/trainees) or if any personal details have changed. You can update details like your phone number, email and address through CIT Self Service.

Unique Student Identifier – USI

It is a requirement that all students enrolling at CIT have a Unique Student Identifier – USI. Get one from usi.gov.au.
